Safe Driving Tips To Help You In Heavy Traffic
Driving in heavy traffic can be stressful but often unavoidable if we live in the city or insist on driving during holiday periods. Despite the best efforts of our Police, often accidents do occur and lives can be changed forever. Greater driver education is a major factor in the reduction of the road toll and it is the responsibility of all road users to be using their car and the roads as safely as possible.
Here are some ways you can keep yourself and other road users safe while driving in heavy traffic.
- Leave plenty of time to get to your destination. No rushing.
- Try taking less busy routes.
- Try not to become impatient.
- Drive at a couple kilometres slower than the traffic.
- Leave a safe stopping distance between you and cars in front of you always.
- If stress or anxiety due to the traffic is intensifying, take a break. Find a safe spot to pull over and give yourself some time out.
- Be well rested and in good health before tackling any drive.
- Always check your mirrors and blind spots prior to merging out into traffic.
- Be prepared for sun in your eyes with sunglasses and sun visors. If the sun is directly in your eyes and you don’t feel comfortable. Pull over to a safe place and allow for it to move.
- Always ensure your car is maintained and that all safety mechanisms are working.
- Try not to become distracted. See our recent post on How To Avoid Life Threatening Distractions When Driving.
- Purchase a modern car with a high safety rating.
